How did it all start?

It all started when I needed a software solution to make a monthly budget and track my spending. I have tried a lot of different solutions but they were all missing my requirements in one way or another.

Some only had mobile apps, without the desktop version. I hate using my phone for tasks like planning a monthly budget. Others were too cluttered with features I didn't care for, and it obscured the main functionality of just making a budget and tracking my spending. And a lot of applications were targeted towards a US audience, I don't live in US, unfortunately.

So, I started building my own solution. At first it was going slow and deadline was whenever, since I was already using one budgeting solution which somewhat satisfied my needs. But one November morning I woke up to an email that said that by the end of the year, budgeting website I was using, will be shut down forever. The race was on!

I employed the help of my colleague who also had interest in personal finance and we got to work. The deadline was set to Christmas 2018, which amounted to roughly 3 weeks. Building on what I had already started some time ago, we rushed through the tasks, working tirelessly after work, during the weekends and sometimes even on our lunch breaks. Finally we managed to release a closed alpha version before the end of the year!

Where will it end?

For the time being, this is just a hobby project that we made for ourselves, our friends, family, and anyone else who's interested in a simple budgeting solution. According to our calculations this may never be a project that provides us with a sustainable income that puts food on our tables, but merely a project that could buy us a cup coffee for our efforts. And it's ok!

No project is ever finished and this one is no exception. We will continue adding features that we need or deem useful for the broader audience, but we can only do that in our spare time, when we're not working or spending time with our families. Therefore the product may not feel too polished at times and some bugs may occur here and there, but be sure - we're doing our best!

Whole development, hosting and infrastructure is funded out of our own pockets and, boy, do those expenses stack up! The upcoming premium features will go towards supporting the project infrastructure. In case we end up with surplus cash, we will reinvest it towards improving our lovely Budgetti system!
